Rejoice Always
Read: Philippians 3:17-4:9
Weddings are a time of celebration and joy. I was at a wedding this past weekend for a good friend who I’ve known for many years. It was fun to hear his excitement leading up to the wedding and to see how excited they both were to begin the journey of marriage together. It was a great time of rejoicing and celebration with family and friends.
It’s easy to rejoice at happy events and during good times, but how easy is it to rejoice during hard times? When the bliss of the wedding is over and things don’t go as planned, will you be rejoicing? What about when you lose your job or go through difficult circumstances? How easy is it for you to rejoice?
In Philippians 4:4 Paul tells us to rejoice always. He felt so strongly about it that he exclaimed again, “Rejoice!” He didn’t tell us to rejoice on our own, but “in the Lord”. God’s strength gives us the power to rejoice in all circumstances. We rejoice knowing that God is in control. His plans are greater than our plans and His ways are better than our ways. We can take comfort knowing that He loves us and wants what’s best for us, even in the midst of our difficult circumstances. Our God is the God of the universe, our creator and sustainer. Nothing is too big for God. Give your fears and worries to him and ask him to replace them with an attitude of rejoicing.
Earlier in this passage Paul told the Philippians to follow his example. This is a great testimony to his character. He lived in such a way that others could follow his example and God would be glorified. Paul did not let his inner attitude reflect his outward circumstances. Though he was in prison, he rejoiced knowing that God was in control and was using his situation for good.
Reflect: Read Philippians 3:17-4:9 again and reflect on the following questions:
- What do you think it means to “rejoice in the Lord”?
- Do you find yourself rejoicing in all circumstances? What prevents you from having an attitude of rejoicing?
- As Christians, how is our perspective on life different, knowing that God is in control? Does this cause us to approach situations differently than non-believers?
- If people were to follow your example or imitate what you do, what would their lives look like? Would it be pleasing to God and bring Him glory?
Remember: Weekly memory verses
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil 4:4-7, NIV)
Going further:
Pray that God would help you to have an attitude of rejoicing this week, regardless of external circumstances, and that he would use your life as a witness to others.
